Binay’s Camp: “A call for unity sounds hollow, call for clean election instead”

Date:

Joey Salgado, the Spokesman of Vice President Jejomar Binay, released the camp’s statement answering President Benigno Aquino’s call to unite presidential candidates against Duterte.

Earlier today, Mar Roxas called for a press conference where he invited rival Sen. Grace Poe to a dialogue. The said talk is mainly about preventing possible dictatorship if Duterte wins the presidential race.

Salgado released a statement on behalf of Binay that the calling for unity sounds hollow, for the administration has been hitting the rivals of the president’s bet throughout the campaign. He said that with only a couple days left before the choosing, the President must ensure fair, clean, and an honest election instead of urging the candidates to unite.

He also emphasized that respecting the people’s judgment is the essence of democracy.

Here is Salgado's full statement:

With two days to go before the people choose their next president, Vice President Binay believes the President should just ensure that the election is free from cheating, violence and intimidation. Besides, such a call for unity sounds hollow considering that the President has been hitting the rivals of Roxas throughout the campaign.

As long as (the candidate) wins in a clean election, we should respect the people’s judgment because that’s the essence of democracy. Vice President Binay continues the fight for a government that is not insensitive and inefficient, and truly serves the poor.”
